I would really like to work as an ambulance driver, but I can’t find anyone who can help me. I have talked with people at the council and with people at the Falck Station, and I now understand that you need to go through a long-term education programme. So, for the time being I am just happy that I have a job and earn my way.
It matters a lot to me that I can make my own decisions, and I can do just that inasmuch as I am in charge of our economy. I have previously tried to ask the council about nearly everything. “May my wife and I travel to Hamburg to visit my brother?” No, they replied, as they did a lot of times when I asked something. Fortunately, it is
no longer like that, and I think we are very happy in Skagen. We like it here, also during the winter, and we have really good neighbours, whom I today regard as my friends.
I was at language school for three months, and I don’t think it was worth the effort. It is much better to learn the language by using it, with friends, at work, and as a Red Cross volunteer. I hope I can increase my circle of friends by being active in my free time. I like to play basketball and volleyball, and I want to find a club, where I can play – or if needed, start one myself.

Yet again there were new acts of war in our region of DR Congo, while at the same time my brother and his wife disappeared. We didn’t know if they had just disappeared or if they had been killed in the war. And we still don’t know.
With even more acts of war, there was only one thing we could do, I thought, and that was to flee. And of course, we – my wife, our daughter, and I – took my brother’s five children with us when we fled to Zambia. After a while most of us came to Denmark via South Africa and Germany.
I never found out why, but the only one who could not go with us at first was my wife, so until a few months ago, I was the sole carer of the six children.
It has been good, and I am happy that the children like it here, and that they like to go to school, and for the oldest that he got a job when he finished school. He is 22 now. Claude, the youngest, is 12. I have learned some Danish, enough to get by, but I still need help when talking with Danes. I get help from the children. They have learned the language quicker than me. I have yet to get a job, even if I would like to. Back in DR Congo, I worked as a taxi driver, and I would like to continue with that in Skagen, but I will need a Danish driving license.
My wife is in Skagen now, so I think everything is going to be alright. Skagen is nice. No war, but unfortunately no job

Life in Aleppo was good for my family, until the civil war broke out. My husband had a factory, so we had money, and I had made a beautiful home for our family. We had four children, two together and two from my previous marriage. The war destroyed everything. We lost the company and our money. My husband fled Syria to find a safe place for the family. After a year in a refugee camp in Turkey, we were granted family reunification with my husband, who had got residence permit in Denmark and a place to live in Skagen.
During my now three years in Denmark, I have suffered from serious health problems. The traumas from the war have given me problems with my memory, my hand is still numb, and two slipped discs make everyday-life a painful hell. The painkillers have led to ulcers, but the medicine gets me through the day. I have been offered an operation,
but I am afraid to say yes, because there is a risk that it could leave me paralyzed. As the situation is right now, at least I can walk. Bu I can’t cope with language school and job training. The children are the most important in my life, and their future lies here in Skagen. Aleppo is completely ruined, and I don’t think we will ever be able to return. The rest of my family is scattered across the globe.

After two years alone with six children in Syria, I finally got family reunification with my husband, who had obtained residence permit in Denmark and now lived in Skagen. When the war broke out, he was working in Saudi Arabia, but chose to travel to Denmark instead of back home to Syria.

The children and I were all very well received, everybody helped us a lot, but then this error occurred, and everything is now so uncertain. But I do believe we will get the residence permit extended eventually. In Syria, we don’t have a home to return to. My mother was killed in
the war, and the rest of the family is scattered everywhere.
My monthly benefits amounted to 6,000 kroner in addition to which I had child support of 3,000 kroner. Now we don’t get any money.
However, we do get a weekly basket of fruit and vegetables from the Red Cross, and sometimes we get things from the local shops. We have been allowed to remain in the flat, but every day it is a struggle to get food on the table. In Syria, I worked away from home as a seamstress, and I would love to find a job here in Skagen, so I don’t have to rely on benefits. I would like to work with the care of the
elderly, and I have offered to become a volunteer at the care home when I am not at language school. But the council says no, because I must take care of my children. I don’t understand their argument, because if I get a job or a job training place, I am away most of the day anyway.

As a Palestinian living in the Middle East outside of the Palestinian
autonomous territories, I was already a refugee. We were looked
down upon by everyone, and all the governments made life hard for
us Palestinians. Here in Denmark I am met with respect for the person
I am, regardless of my background.
I was born and raised in Kuwait, but when Iraq attacked Kuwait in
1990, we returned to my parent’s hometown of Homs in Syria. A
knee injury put a stop to my career as a professional football player,
so I established a company for import of goods from China. But the
civil war in Syria went on not only to destroy my business but also my
family home, so we fled to Turkey, where my family bought a house.
But my childhood friend Mahmout and I wanted to start a new life in
Europe.
Now I am happy to be out of the Middle East. Their governments
are evil. In Denmark everything is under control, and there is no
corruption. It is a good system. You may pay high taxes, but you get
help if you become ill. In Skagen, I had job training at Prime Ocean,
and subsequently a proper job at the fish processing plant. It is a
good place, and the bosses treat everybody alike.

I came to Denmark in 2015 and Skagen in 2016, but it wasn’t until a couple of months ago that my wife joined me in Skagen. She is now at language school, which also could sort of be said of our 3-year old
daughter, who is at the crib where all the other children are Danish. Later she will go to kindergarten, where she will learn Danish from the other children, so she will probably end up learning the language faster than my wife and me.

Instead they found me a job at
the Danish Crown meat processing plant in Sæby. I have to take that job, but I really hope that when I have become better at speaking Danish, I can return to the technical school, even if I have to work at Danish Crown.
My wife and I have realised that we shall live here in the future, but the way it looks now, we are not sure we can remain in Skagen, because it is far from my work in Sæby. So, it may be necessary for us to move to Frederikshavn or to Sæby.

In Columbia, we lived in constant fear and hardly dared lie down to sleep. We were terrified of what could happen during the night. If someone came to kill us.

I fled with my 18-month-old son Edinson to neighbouring Ecuador. But this is a country where human rights are subject to daily violation, so we applied for asylum in a peaceful country, all while we stayed temporarily with an acquaintance. One day I got a letter confirming
that the UN quota system had decided that our future would lie here in Denmark. After a brief stay in Aalborg, we were moved to a place in Skagen.
We feel completely safe here in Skagen. When I think of life before the flight, I struggle to remember anything nice. It was always war and insecurity. The only decent thing was the weather. Always hot and sunny, even during the winter.
In Skagen, however, I enjoy the peace and quiet. During the week, there isn’t time for much. Going
to school at VUC, including commute, is ten hours per day. After two years at the language school in Frederikshavn, I speak Danish so well that I was able to start at VUC, and my ambition is to study to be a nurse. Edinson, who is now eight, goes to school in Skagen, and we both enjoy the small town, where we now have several local acquaintances, including some from the church.

I suffer from diabetes 1, which is difficult to regulate, and among its many related diseases is impaired vision. The illnesses have a lot of impact on our lives. They nearly overshadow the relief of having escaped the war and the gratitude of having been granted asylum in a country, where the family and the children can live in safety.
Our hometown Afrin in northern Syria was bombed by Syrian and Turkish military. The flight from Afrin went across the border to Turkey, not a nice place for Kurds, but it was the only route out. We succeeded in getting on a boat to Greece, where we followed the flow of Syrian refugees up through Europe. We travelled by bus and train, but most
of the journey was on foot. During the two weeks on the roads I was left without medicine, so on arrival to Sandholm, I was immediately admitted to hospital.
Skagen is the perfect place for us. The town is not all that big, the children thrive at their school, and we have got to know our neighbours. We meet for a coffee, even if the language is difficult. Our intension when leaving Syria was just to find a country where we could live safely. We had heard a lot of good things about Denmark. We had also heard that the Danes were pretty racist, but that applies to the government only. The people here in Denmark have received us well, not least the people of Skagen. What we dream about is getting the health issues in order, getting
good at Danish, and long-term peace in Syria, because we miss our homeland.
